It is with great pleasure that I begin the Henry J. Mikell
Province Commander’s Blog. First, I must
thank Brother Austin Fincher our Province Undergraduate Chairman for creating
our Facebook page, a page that I trust will be used to its fullest extent. My
hope is that these blogs will motivate you to think about your KA experience
now as undergraduates and as you graduate and move on to great and wonderful
experiences. Blogs will originate from me or the Deputy Province Commanders. Some of our blogs will be thought provoking,
so let’s get to it.
As we approach Mother’s Day, I have been thinking about our
public motto, “Dieu et les Dames”, no it is not French for Momma’s boy, but the
Texas translation is “God and the Ladies”.
My momma was born in 1939, she is 73 years young this year
and she is still the fiery ball of energy I knew as kid. As a youngster I was handful and even though my
momma stands only 5 foot tall she was able to make me mind my manners and she
was always there for me too, good times and bad. She made volcanoes in elementary school, costumes
for plays, repaired my little league uniform, went to all of my Boy Scout
Courts of Honor, she picked me up when I skinned my knee, elbow, chin and most
body parts I either broke or mangled. She
even convinced me not to change my name in the 3rd grade. I thought spelling Marc with a “c” was weird,
that was a tough negotiation….she won that one. Most of all, she always told me I could do
anything, even when the odds were against me, she never flinched. So when I went on to college and pledged KA,
I read in my Varlet about the age of
chivalry and the reverence of woman. I
thought that the Knights of Old had it right, protect the weak, aid the poor,
seek justice and most importantly revere pure womanhood.
If it is your mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, wife, or a
special lady in your life, celebrate them this coming Sunday and every day.
….and yes, I AM a momma’s boy!
Excelsior!
Marc
